Upcoming Meeting – New members night – Thursday 1st of September

August 26, 2011

An open evening for anyone to come down and find out about the club.  I have had 3 enquiries about visiting so we should see some new faces amongst the regular members.  Bring some of your favorite effects and have fun showing them off.

Meeting will be at the normal place at 7.30.  Sorry I can’t make it but I have the onerous duty to compare an evening of belly dancing and burlesque.  I have taken on this horrible task so you don’t have to.

Meeting Report – Roger Curzon Lecture and Mark’s Audition

August 5, 2011

last night we had a great night at the circle.

The evening started with an audition from Mark Lindsey.  Mark presented a number of mind reading effects and with a full audience did well.  The committee was unanimous in voting him in as a new member and we look forward to more miracles in the future.

Roger is a well known local magician who has in recent years moved from being an excellent card man to being an excellent card man with a growing interest in mental magic and bizarre magic.  His lecture consisted of a first half of some of his bizarre effects and clearly demonstrated Rogers though processes when it comes to magic.  He performed and gave explanations of a number of effects from his Pentalism DVD and Sublimations Book (both contain excellent effects and are available from Russell at  Magic Enterprises  magickwords.wordpress.com ).

In the second half Roger performed a selection of effects from his “Great Uncle Albert’s Box” show.  A series of linked stories told us about Uncle Albert and some of the things he did in his “Evil and wicked life”.  Spooky magic and strange stories were brought to life, ending with Great Uncle Albert’s wife returning from her grave to exact her horrible revenge.  All good wholesome family fun.

An excellent night and it was great to see several new faces amongst the regular members.  Hope to see you all again soon and joining is very easy to do.

All the best

Meeting Report – 7th July – John Carey Lecture

July 8, 2011

Another excellent meeting with over 25 people coming down for the lecture.  John presented his “Handle with Carey” lecture which was very well received.  Concentrating on coins and cards John presented us with some excellent magic with clear explanations.  Nothing in this set was too difficult and I certainly went away with a couple of gems I need to practice.  A huge thank you to John for giving us a great night and to all the people that helped make it happen.

The next meeting is the 6th of August and Roger Curzon will be presenting his Sublimations lecture and we will hopfully have a new member audition to start the night off.

All the best

Andy

John Carey Lecture – Thursday 7th of July

June 30, 2011

John Carey Lecture: Thursday 7th of July. 7.30pm Magic Lounge

Sheffield Circle of Magicians warmly invite you to join us as John Carey presents his Handle With Carey lecture. Practicality is a key word with John’s work. “I no longer have time for effects that involve long set ups and dead time. Audience attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. Material that is direct, visual and interactive are my goals. Confusion isn’t magic as Vernon once said”.  The lecture is free to Members and £10 to non members (all welcome). It will begin at 7.30 pm at the excellent Magic Lounge, 82 Broad Street, Sheffield, S2 5TG.

More information about John can be found at http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/about.html

His area of expertise is coin manipulation and he has spent years dedicated to revolutionizing this branch of magic. Magic Scene also awarded him the distinction of being ‘The Performer to Watch in 2009″.

Craig has published over 10 DVD’s on the art of sleight of hand specifically for magicians and these have proven to be a huge hit worldwide. In 2009 he was invited to represent England in the European Championships of Magic and on top of this is the current 3SM Champion of Magic. Craig has also been invited this year to compete in the Northern Close Up Magician of the year competition and The Magic Circle Close Up Magician of the year competition.

He is a member of the Inner Magic Circle with a Silver Star and was only the third person in history to ever be awarded this position straight from joining. As well as being a great performer he is in demand as a magical teacher helping other magicians improve and grow as performers. Auction Night round up

February 15, 2011

Auction night was a great night.  A large number of lots were submitted (including some that were of excellent quality).  Many members came away with a bargain or two.  Mr Chambers provided much of the hard bidding and came a way with a fair sized haul.  Rob and Adam got into a serious bidding war for a small wooden puzzle, never before have I seen such frenzied bidding in increments of 2 new pence!  Adam won in the end.  Thanks to Ken for his David Dickensonesque auctioneering, Pete for keeping count and collecting the money at the end and to Russell for hosting us.

Cheers

Andy

Auction Night – 3rd of February

January 26, 2011

Next meeting is our annual Auction night.

7.30 pm on the 3rd of February at Magick Enterprise.

Bring your unwanted magic (and lets be honest we all have stuff in the draw that we don’t use) and auction it off.  Always a popular night, bring a friend and buy one item or a whole new act!

See you there.
