Auction Night Thursday 5th of February

February 2, 2015

It’s February and the cold, damp weather has brought with it a dose of cold, damp reality. Let’s face it, you’re not going to use half of that stuff you’ve bought over the past year.

But help is nigh! Parcel up your unwanted props, books and DVDs and bring them down to the Sheffield Circle Annual Magic Auction Night here at the Lounge on Thursday 5 February. You know it makes sense.

Doors open at 7:00. And I’ll be waving my gavel promptly from 7:30 onwards. If you’re bringing items for auction I strongly suggest that you make a list, preferably two copies; it makes the Treasurer’s job much easier. Ten percent of the proceeds go to Circle funds.

Silly bids will be ignored or converted into something more sensible at the auctioneers discretion.

Admission is free to SCM members. Visiting magicians £3. Don’t forget to bring your wallet.

(with thanks to Russell for the text!)

We need your help – Sheffield Magic Festival and an Extra Auction Night

October 17, 2014
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help out at this year’s Sheffield Street Magic Festival, which was such a boost for magic in Sheffield last year. There’s plenty of information on Russell’s blog (http://magickwords.wordpress.com/ but I’m sure you knew that!) and on the Sheffield Magicians Facebook page.
If you’ve still to volunteer… there’s always room for more. There will be payment, but as last year it will depend on what cash is left over after paying hire fees, printing, etc.
There are still tickets available for the shows on the Saturday and Sunday evenings, available from Magick. And please help to sell them. If every member could sell just six tickets we’d have a sell-out show at the Library Theatre on Sunday. How many have you sold so far?
To recap:
On Saturday and Sunday 1 and 2 November there will be magic in the streets around the city centre between 12:30 and 4:00 p.m. Look out for the three Sheffield Street Magic Festival gazebos. The area in front of the Town Hall will be the  main focus for the street magic with Barkers Pool and Fargate as secondary sites. Bad weather provisions are being organised.
The gazebo in front of the Town Hall will act as an information centre, so call here to pick up your official lanyards if you’re taking part. But let Russ know in good time if you want one with your photo on! If you still have your official T-Shirt from last year, feel free to wear it!
Two ‘junior magician’ workshops are being on the Saturday afternoon in the Town Hall, which Craig is running (although helpers are welcome!). Times are 1:00 to 2:00 and 3:00 to 4:00. Admission is free by ticket available from the main gazebo/information centre in front of the Town Hall. Numbers are strictly limited.
The Spooky Magic Evening, which will include a Theatrical Seance will be held in The Minstrel’s Chambers in the Town Hall at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday 1st of November. Doors will creak slowly open at 6:30.
Appearing are Ashton Carter, Roger Curzon, John Blackwood plus special guests. Tickets are £8. This presentation is designed for over 16’s only. Due to the nature of the performances latecomers may be refused entry. Please note that this is a traditional parlour style performance and is limited to 50 spectators only. First come…
The stage show will be at Sheffield’s Library Theatre, on Surrey Street, next to the Lyceum, on Sunday 2nd of November 2014. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children under 16. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.
The show will be hosted by Sheffield’s own Steve Faulkner. We have a truly outstanding bill for you: John Archer, Peter Antoniou, Looch, Jared Manley, and Tim Smithies. (Russell will be behind the scenes stage-managing for this lot; should be fun…!)
John Archer, incidentally, was the first to fool Penn & Teller on ITV’s “Penn & Teller – Fool Us” Hosted by Jonathan Ross. He is a former Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year, and one of the best, funniest magicians around today. But don’t just take my word…
“Booking an act for my Dad’s 70th birthday, I wanted a great act and went straight to John Archer – his reputation in the magic world is among the very best. Hysterically funny, and perfectly pitched for the occasion. He made the evening. I’d recommend him unreservedly.” — Derren Brown – TV Magician and Psychological Illusionist.
“You could put John Archer anywhere and he would KILL an audience.” — Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller).
“One of the  Funniest men I know.” Tim Vine – Comedian.
(Bring your notebook, Adam.)
Peter Antoniou — The ‘Psychic’ Comedian — has become known as the enfant terrible of stand-up comedy and side show entertainment, using his unique skills to became an underground sensation and make his exciting live appearances mysterious and memorable. He now presents his remarkable and hilarious live shows internationally for comedy clubs, sell-out theatre audiences and blue chip companies.
Peter has performed his sell-out critically acclaimed show at Rockness, Bestival, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sheffield Comedy Festival, Leicester Comedy Festival, Southport Comedy Festival, Hull Comedy Festival, The Vault Festival, Leicester Square Theatre, Etcetera Theatre, and he regularly performs across the country at major comedy clubs as both a headliner and an MC.
“Brilliant” – BBC
“Phenon-mentally good” – Kerrang!
“Be afraid – he knows what you’re thinking” — Sheffield Star
As an encouragement to street magic performers, Russell is offering a free ticket for the fabulous Sunday Night Show to anyone who works both the Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Posters are now available for these events in two sizes: A3 (397 x 420 mm, approximately 11.7 x 16.5 inches) and A4 (210 x 297 mm, approximately 8.27 x 11.7 inches). If you can help by displaying a poster you can pick one (or more!) up from Magick during opening hours (11:00 to 5:30 any day except Thursday or Sunday). Or if you have a printer Russell is happy to email a copy to you as a pdf (tell him which size you require) or message him, email him, text him or ring 0114 276 0482.
Please tell all your friends, family, lovers, co-workers, fellow Facebookers, gym members, acquaintances, enemies and that guy in the pub you nod to on Thursdays, tickets can be obtained now from Magick, 82 Broad Street, Sheffield, S2 5TG. Or by ringing us on 0114 276 0482 during opening hours (11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except Thursdays and Sundays). You can pay by cash, Paypal or any major debit or credit card.

Luke Jermay lecture 1st of May

April 24, 2014

We are very proud to be hosting the always excellent Luke Jermay for a very special lecture on Thursday the 1st of May.

Luke Jermay_Sixth Sense

Luke has performed magic since the age of 12. At age 15, he wrote his first published book 7 Deceptions (Wonder Wizards, 2000) which launched him as an innovator within the magic community. Since then he has written a total of 34 books on the subject of mentalism and mind illusion.

He has performed in more than 20 countries including his native United Kingdom and the United States in venues from local pubs to the London Palladium. Best known for his use of suggestion and covert forms of psychological influence, his trademark routines are a self-induced cessation of his pulse, followed by stopping of a random audience member’s pulse, and The Chair Prediction, a routine in which he predicts which chair a spectator will choose to sit in.

Luke has written a total of 33 books and manuscripts on magic and magic theory, including 7 Deceptions, Building Blocks, Coral Fang, and 3510.

He has also worked with many other magicians and mentalists as writer, designer of psychological illusions and program consultant. His first consulting work was on season 1 of Derren Brown, Mind Control (2000), which he continued on seasons 2 and 3. Luke also worked with Criss Angel on seasons 1 and 2 of Mind Freak, and with Marco Tempest on The Virtual Magician. He also served as consultant for the television series The Mentalist. More recently he has consulted for Dynamo.

On Thursday 1 May at The Magick Lounge (Magick Enterprises, 82 Broad Street, Sheffield, S2 5GT) you can expect a fun, entertaining, but most of all a thought-provoking lecture. The Luke Jermay Sheffield Lecture is definitely one not to be missed! Doors open at 7:02 and we start at 7:30. Admission is free for Sheffield Circle members, £10 for visiting magicians.
